about

“Friends on the Street” was inspired by Celeste’s encounters with the homeless community on the streets of the Melbourne CBD.

Typically known for her songs of love and loss, “Friends on the Street” sees Celeste Kate exploring her craft through a whole new lens, as the Single marks her first studio release on the topic of a social justice issue close to her heart.

“Friends on the Street” comes off the back of her 2019 single “Two Weeks” which received a place in the Top 30 Contemporary Pop and Dance category of the 2020 Australian Songwriters Association Competition.

Blending atmospheric piano, intimate vocals and powerful lyrical imagery, “Friends on the Street” creates a musical tension and release throughout, juxtaposing the socio-political subject matter with beautiful and memorable melodies and harmonies.

Friends on the Street – Music & Lyrics by Celeste Kate Polson Copyright 2021

He sits at parliament station
Prays each day for his salvation
Knocked down by a sequence
of unfortunate events

But he doesn’t let this break him
His faith is strong his spirit won’t be shaken
He sits there wishing all the passers by
“a lovely evening and travel home safety tonight”

We’ve got a chance to take the lead
To free their anxiety
We’ve got a chance to be the voice
they cannot bring themselves to speak

She sits nearby the station
Her soul is drenched beyond devastation
Knocked down
She’s been let down
one too many times before

She’s lost the strength to feel hope
She can’t see colour anymore
She sits there calling to the passers by
“I “just” need 10 dollars to feed my baby tonight”

We’ve got a chance to take the lead
To free their anxiety
We’ve got a chance to be the voice they cannot bring themselves to speak
You and me helping our friends on the street
We’ve got a chance to be the change we wish to see

Don’t be afraid to let kindness show
If your open up your heart you will know
what the meaning of love really is

We’ve got a chance to take the lead
To free their anxiety
We’ve got a chance to be the voice they cannot bring themselves to speak
You and me helping our friends on the street
We’ve got a chance to be the change we wish to see
